Eskkar & Trella – The Beginning (645 pages) – is the latest novel in Sam Barone’s five part series, a bronze age historical saga in the tradition of Conn Iggulden, Bernard Cornwell and Jean Auel.
In Dawn of Empire, Eskkar the warrior and Trella the keen-witted slave girl come together in a mighty struggle to survive a barbarian invasion and build mankind’s first walled city. But Eskkar’s story began many years earlier, when his family was brutally murdered in a blood feud. His name and heritage obliterated, young Eskkar flees his clan and the only life he knows. Condemned as an outcast, he learns to survive, hunted by his own kind, and hated and feared by all others.
For fifteen years, Eskkar wanders the Land Between The Rivers, home of his hereditary enemies, fighting to stay alive and to reach manhood. All the while he is learning the skills that will one day make him not only a true warrior, but a leader of men on and off the battlefield.
Trella, too, witnesses her family destroyed in a single night of vengeance, and her life of ease and privilege lost. Captured and sold to a slave trader, she must use her keen mind, extraordinary perception, and perfect memory to regain control of her life. While appearing to serve her masters, Trella learns to manipulate the powerful men who now own her body. Soon she becomes the unseen influence whose knowledge and training guide the way to the founding of an empire.
Eskkar and Trella join together and form a unique bond that enables them to overcome the limits their world has placed upon them. These are the stories of their journeys toward one another and to their shared destiny – an enduring love that changes civilization forever.

OK, I'll admit that this was another one of those books that I immediately bought within five minutes of getting an eMail from the author telling me about it. I've been a huge fan of Sam Barone ever since `Dawn of Empire'. `Dawn' was published in 2006 and here I am six years later still excited to be reading about this series. That says a lot. `Eskkar & Trella' is the fourth book of the series but it's also a prequel to the other three. I was eager to read about Eskkar because I remembered how brutal and burly he was. This was a (very) rough time in history and nowhere has the phrase "only the strong survive" meant more. You either fought and fought well, or you take early leave of your life.If you were a woman... well, if you were a woman you had little choice than being property. Your only hope was to find a man/husband who would only beat you once a day and take his unnatural pleasures with a young slave. Food was scarce, Villages were small, bandits were the ancient outlaws, and blood flowed faster than the Tigris. In `Eskkar & Trella' we see how Eskkar becomes an outcast and the events that he endured that helped (or hindered) him in becoming a man. It's up to you if you want to read this series in chronological order or published order. Personally I think you should read them in published order because there are certain nuisances and certain growth you see in the author and their stories when they write "out of order".
Anyway... in this brutal world Eskkar must learn to use his brawn as well as his wits to survive. "Trust no one" isn't just a popular modern saying, it's a lesson you learn fast if you want survive. In this life adventure Eskkar meets thieving villagers, sharp swords, loose women, hunger, thirst, betrayal, blood, the unforgiving earth, and plenty of ale.
This book starts with a young Eskkar and the telling of life around his village. Something happens to his father that causes him to become an outcast. Easily one of the worst things that can happen to anyone, but to a young man it's an almost sure death sentence. But Eskkar isn't your normal man. He must fight and kill for the smallest scrap of bread and every day is a gift. Every village has an "Elder" or a group of "Elders" to rule. With no one really in charge justice is fleeting and found only on the edge of a sword, the end of a fist, or underneath a loincloth. Eskkar's existence is brutal and reading about him has been a true thrill for the past six years. I see that the next book comes out this summer... glad to see my obsession can continue.

Eskkar Trella The Beginning Sam Barone 9780615511757 Books Reviews
First I would just like to say this series from Barone is very well written. The stories and characters will have you hooked. Also the series is a very well thought out believable theory about how humans transfer from roaming hunter warrior clans to farming communities and powerful cities. This book lets you see Eskkar from the age of 12 to the mid 20s. He fights through the hardships of being a stepps clan warrior that no longer has a clan and must get by with the farmers (dirt eaters) who naturally fear and hate his kind. If you like Conn Iggulden , James Clavell ,Christian Cameron ,or Bernard Cornwell this series is right up your ally.
Well up to Barone's standards, this novel does a nice job setting the stage for the future rulers of Akkad. The settings and characters are consistent with the first two books, and provide an excellent ramp-up to their meeting.
I also found the vignette approach to teeling the story interesting. It flows nicely, showing Eskkar's growth and development, without tying him to the various people he encounters through the years of wandering. With limited direct knowledge of those times, it is easy to envision that while Eskkar was an unusual individual for his day, he was in essence a nomad, not putting down roots until circumstances almost forced him to.
A really good read if you like historical fiction.
Creating compelling dramatizations of historical figures is extremely difficult. Doing so whilst staying true to historically verifiable events is nearly impossible. Sam has joined the elite ranks or historical fictionalists heretofore dominated by McCullough, Wilber Smith, Cornwell and Iggulden.
Where recorded history lapses, Sam provides plausible and flawlessly logical events to maintain the story and the continuum.
However, great research without great characters would result in a dull novel! Not so with this series! Sam has created characters in whom we believe and with whom we emphasize. Their lives are truly brought to life in our mind's eye.
All of the books in the series are great reads.
Action and Adventure - As much as you could ask for and more. Sam Barone's Eskkar series portrays life in the Bronze Age unblinkingly. Life was brutal, and this book can be as well. But I did not find the violence gratuitous - just a realistic portrayal of how people lived. You'll be glad you live now, that's for sure. Every man's-man I know that reads for pleasure would love this series. I'm a woman, and I love it too.
Although the 4th book published, this is a prequel. Sam Barone's website suggest reading it first, and I'm glad I did. I'm now into Dawn of Empire, and knowing the back stories of the main characters makes it more enjoyable. Check it out! "Eskkar and Trella" is loanable. Read this book and you'll be hooked on the series. Loan it to a friend, and they will be, too.
Writing a prequel to an established series is not a challenge I would willingly take up. Making a prequel truly great must be one of the hardest things in the world (just ask George Lucas!) Sam Barone actually pulls it off. The best thing for me in reading this book was the experience of seeing the world from a completely foreign point of view. In life and in writing fiction, I see the world through feminist eyes. As I read Eskkar's story, I got to see the world from the viewpoint of people I would normally consider the "bad guys". Yet the author manages to make Eskkar believable, interesting, and even sympathetic.
The violence was a bit much at times and parts of the book infuriated me. Yet when I had finished all 631 pages, and pickced up my next read--a "chicklit" romance--I found it too bland for words, and put it down after 50 pages. I'm very glad the next book in the Eskkar series is coming out this summer!
